whoops rly long post, me thinking about dbz shit

man woah i dont remember much about the political situation with the saiyans in this so this seems kind of new to me and im a little confused

i thought there were only four saiyans left, raditz, vegeta, nappa, and goku (and gohan, but raditz only mentioned the four “pureblood” adults) but vegeta went to these guys who wear the same armor, and one of them looks human, so he… might be a saiyan? maybe? but most of them are other aliens, but all wearing the same armor, and they all answer to frieza, including vegeta… who was shown annihilating the saiyans and blowing up planet vegeta at the beginning of the show, so… i guess i thought vegeta and nappa and raditz would have been opposing frieza, but i guess he like… assimilated them into his army? (which would probably have been easy considering goku, vegeta and probably raditz were babies when this happened, though im not sure how he managed to recruit nappa instead of just killing him) and either took over doing what the saiyans did, with wiping out the dominant life on a planet and then selling it to other races as real estate, or he doesnt do that but allowed the saiyans to continue their business under his management and watch? or he already did that in the first place and destroying planet vegeta was just getting rid of the competition in the… intergalactic conqueror real estate business

ok i guess thinking it out it does make sense im just confused because gosh i dont remember this at all… so vegeta is now rebelling and trying to get to namek’s dragonballs before frieza, probably so he can save the saiyan race, and… man maybe its just the design stuff thats confusing me, i thought the armor vegeta and nappa and them wore was a saiyan specific thing, but all these other guys that work for freiza wear them too, including the scouters, but now im realizing freizas army in the first episode had those too

and actually bardock didnt even have a scouter, he just had a version of that armor without shoulderpads, so maybe thats why vegeta doesnt trust the scouters reliability, because its not saiyan technology, it was issued to him when frieza took over

dang this is kind of a long post isnt it, all this thought about the intergalactic politics of a show about powering up and being strong, whoops

writing out stuff im confused about helps me figure it out i guess

ok so i just watched young justice 19-21

spoilers for those episodes

anyway so hi good morning

i watched the rest of young justice which i realized wasnt all of it, i thought what i downloaded was the whole show since it said volumes 1 and 2 but i guess the rest of the show hasnt come out on dvd yet rip

so i still have a few more episodes which is good because i havent had enough artemis yet i like just met her!!

also was it just me or was cheshire hitting on all the ladies, jesus

“hello doctor, time for my appointment”

“ooh, i was hoping it’d be you”

“well, i am completely at your mercy… *sexy look*”

wally still needs to shut the fuck up though, its like hes getting worse the more ladies are in his presence

also does robin ever mature

because he seems like hes like, a different version of that weird phase dick was in when he was inbetween being robin and nightwing, and in the comics that made him just really angsty but in this i guess it just means hes a huge smug douche

i need him to arrive at that nightwing place soon because i cant handle two of wally on this team when we dont even need one

also when does superboy develop a character

its like he was starting to in the first two episodes and then they just forgot

so i watched half of young justice with my brother yesterday, up through the bane episode

our observations and notes:

  • we pretty much immediately determined that kaldur was the only team member worth anything (mind you this is on the first episode when its just him, robin and kid flash)
  • and then i also realized i ship kaldur and superboy, that happened
  • also we both have just been uttering “shut the fuck up wally” a lot
  • like, pretty much every time he opens his mouth
  • especially after megan shows up
  • its not even a conscious decision anymore
  • robin too, he should also shut the fuck up
  • bane was great
  • i love how he wasnt even being subtle about using the team and he was just super amused at the conflict happening
  • also reciting futbol scores to block out telepaths
  • and that part where robin was like “youre right, we dont have batman, but im the closest thing” and bane is just like PFFHAHAHAHA
  • roy is angsty as fuck
  • superboy is actually made of angst
  • megan deserves better teammates
  • seriously the thing where she thought mister twister was red tornado and it turned out she was wrong and robin is like “it was a rookie mistake, we shouldnt have listened to her”
  • CAN YOU EVEN GET ANY DOUCHIER THAN THAT
  • CHRIST
  • yeah megan deserves better teammates like kaldur everyone should be kaldur
  • also im so glad he ended up being the leader because hes the only one thats good at it
  • i cant believe robin thinks hes the leader AND I CANT BELIEVE KALDUR THINKS HE SHOULD BE TOO what the fuck
  • also where the fuck is artemis
  • shes been in the intro of every episode and i have not seen her who is this mysterious lady

those are my notes

i wish the villains in this werent like

Inherently Evil

like, right off the bat it treats you like youre this… like feelingsless monster who enjoys torturing and killing and evil stuff

without a real reason for it

like, my favorite villains all have good motives, like, maybe they dont think theyre the good guy (although i love if they do), but they should at least feel justified in what theyre doing, whether or not what theyre doing actually is justifiable

like, lex luthor thinks hes the good guy, he thinks hes the only good guy, and hes the only one in the world that realizes it. he thinks superman is an atom bomb waiting to go off, hes the most powerful being in the world and maybe hes using his powers for good right now, but what about when he decides hes bored of humanity? what if hes been lying all along, and hes just an infiltrator and hes getting close to everyone only so he can take over the world without them even noticing? thats how lex luthor sees things, and he may not actually be right, but he thinks he is, so to him, hes doing the right thing

but if you look at the joker

the joker doesnt think hes doing the right thing, he doesnt think hes doing anything, he just enjoys killing and doing awful shit for literally no reason, he has no motivation, theres no humanity to him, nothing you can relate to, hes just supposed to be this completely different breed of person and thats that

thats how city of heroes villains seem to work

theres nothing relatable about them, even the gang members on the hero side, they dont seem to be doing it because they need money or because they want money or even because they want power, they just do it because they enjoy hurting people and being Bad and it doesnt make any fucking sense

also the politics on mercy island really confuse me

arachnos owns the islands, right? and the enemies are longbow agents, basically like shield but for the city of heroes universe, who are trying to take the island back and save the citizens or whatever, and the guy who gives you your missions says something like “youre under the so-called protection of longbow” or something, so like… does that mean arachnos thinks longbow do a bad job of protecting their citizens? and theyre trying to be better at it, like how dr. doom is really protective of the latverian people? because that would make sense, and would be really cool too, and bring more depth to the heroes side too, since like, you actually CAN see longbow guys just standing around while people are being mugged a block away, well within their sight, but they just stand there and do nothing because who cares, some hero will take care of it

but

then theres also these corrupt cops who beat up people who are labeled like Suspected Shoplifter and other small time crimes, and theyre called RIP, rogue island police, and you can fight them, theyre early enemies

but they wear an arachnos badge on them, and the mission giver guy implies theyre on the arachnos payroll

but im supposed to fight them…? arent they just arachnos agents? whats the difference between an arachnos wolf spider and an arachnos cop? are they just at the bottom of the food chain and we’re all aloud to mistreat them because theyre cops? because i mean, i guess i can buy that, but then why make them corrupt? why add in people for me to save without explanation? AM i supposed to be protecting the people of the rogue isles? is everyone that lives here a criminal, or a homeless person? i see a lot of homeless npcs, maybe all the upstanding citizens left and this is like, where the people who cant get work anywhere else or have nowhere to live come

so is it a safe haven? if it is, why are there wolf spiders pointing guns at random people as well as longbow agents in the first area? are we oppressive invaders holding the island hostage, or are we protectors of the criminal underdogs?

if we were just occupying this island and terrorizing its citizens, that would at least make sense (though i wish there was some kind of understandable motivation to it), but then the saving small-time crooks from abusive cops thing just confuses it all, im honestly very confused

someone please explain this to me!!!!!!!

a post about the possible triggers present in game of thrones

hhhhhhello

i avoided tumblr today because i was watching game of thrones with my brother

we watched almost the whole thing (i had seen up to ep 6, he had only seen the first one, so we did 2-10)

its a really good show, or at least i enjoy it a lot

there are definitely issues with it, and things to be aware of before you go to watch it, if you are interested

and i think ill try to list those now since i told myself (and reba) i would, be warned there are a lot

first off the portrayal of the dothraki is prrrrretty dang racist, like… i guess not as bad as other things ive seen but, like, that doesnt mean its good

its also, ive heard, slightly worse about that than it was in the books? or at least in the portrayal of the most prominent dothraki character (this was my source for that, its a good article that explains better than i could)

also, rape is referenced a lot and shown a few times, lots of sexism happens, i dont think the show is sexist though? i could be wrong about that, but, a lot of sexism does happen, like, to the characters, yknow

its also a very violent show, theres pretty frequent violent deaths, and since its a fantasy thing, that (kind of predictably) includes animal violence

there are ableist slurs and sexist slurs

lets see, uhh

i guess that might be it, thats all i can think of

if there are more im missing please lemme know

i realize this makes it sound like a pretty awful show but the story is really very good and there are so many characters i love, aria, catelyn, daenerys (minding obviously the… ickiness of basically her whole story), tyrion, jon snow, ned, poor ned…

but it definitely is a very… brutal and gruesome show and certainly not for everyone

and just… yknow, i mean i knew going in that it would be like that, but considering most of what i had seen on tumblr about it didnt warn for any of this, i thought i should… you know, warn for it

anyway yeah theres that

hi tumblr

whatsyourfavoritevegetable:

funny how quickly you can forget me, your best friend, your sister

once i show my true colors you show yours, and they clash, and we separate

suddenly im a criminal, a villain, a monster, and your vices are erased

and just like that i never existed, not as anything real, not as a person

i was just a bad dream

stuff superheroes need

ive been thinking about the things most good superheroes, or… like, successful, or iconic superheroes, i mean, the stuff they all have in common, the stuff they need to be good characters or to have well structured stories

okay, so, first, obviously

a simple, recognizable costume

if batman had been dressed the way bob kane wanted him, in a red and black bodysuit with a domino mask and glider, do you think he would have lasted as long as he has? probably not!!! he would have gone the way of all the other golden age heroes nobody has heard of. its that simple, sleek, scary, and cool costume thats kept him popular (along with a lot of other things, obviously), and the fact that its changed so little since his first appearance speaks to the perfection of its design

same goes for superman, aside from a new S shield, some nicer boots and a bigger cape, he looks exactly the same as he did in the 30s, for good reason— have you seen the reboot costume? or the one hes wearing in the zac snyder movie? you dont fuck with supermans outfit, its perfect. its colorful, simple, recognizable, its an archetype all its own. like batman’s, many superheroes have based themselves on this costume’s look.

theyre both simple, but say a lot about the person wearing them: superman is colorful, all the primary colors, almost an american flag, his cape flows in the wind, he doesnt wear a mask to hide his face, hes open, friendly, strong, and heroic. batman is almost all in shades of black and grey, a shiny black cowl covers most of his face, his cape has sharp edges resembling bat wings, hes broody, angry, terrifying, and looks like he can mess you up in fifty different ways, because he can. his yellow belt is filled with knives and rope and hooks, vials filled with mysterious chemicals and antidotes, pockets full of who knows what— hes prepared for any situation.

and spider-man, he may not really resemble a spider, being red and blue, but his costume is undoubtedly recognizable, considering within the marvel universe, captain america is supposed to be the most famous hero, like superman to dc, but in the real world, nobody is more popular than spider-man. i dont know how ditko made a guy wearing red and blue, covered head to toe in spiderweb lines and two spider insignias on him work, but… he just did. it works. it totally works. spidermans design says everything about him. his mask totally covering his face shows that he cares more about helping people than letting everyone know who he is, the lack of cape or belt or anything on him says hes agile, doesnt want to be weighed down, doesnt need anything that would weigh him down, all of his superhero gear is just himself, which tells you his powers are biological, too.

i think i rambled on the costume too long so im gonna go to the next thing

secret identity

most superheroes have a secret identity. not all of them have one, not all of them need one, but most of them do, for one reason or another. for some its to be more than a person, to be just a symbol without identity, something that maybe isnt even human, or that isnt just one person, but represents the good in all people. for others its about protecting loved ones from villains bent on re-enacting the killing joke for the millionth time. some of them just dont need superhero junk bleeding into their regular lives, or dont want the attention or thanks that would come with being a public hero, they dont need to be recognized to do the right thing. some probably dont know why they have one, they just do because its what superheroes do. maybe it would be embarrassing to be seen in their costumes if people knew who they were. WHO KNOWS. theres a lot of reasons, but most superheroes have a secret identity, an alter-ego.

some way to know about danger

spider-man has his spider-sense, batman has the bat-signal, superman, aside from his super-hearing and x-ray vision, has an emergency communicator watch that goes off if jimmy or lois need help, and the two of them being the gutsy ace reporters they are, that usually means thats where the action is. if they didnt have these things, they would just have to like, what, go around every inch of their city looking for trouble? a lot of them do do that, they patrol for people who dont have access to those super-communicators but still need help, but for big villains or bank heists, for some sign of great danger (or the start of a story arc), a superhero needs a direct line to trouble.

spider-mans spider-sense makes his head jolt when theres danger somewhere near, usually danger for him, but sometimes if action is going on somewhere close-by, he can feel that too. if he didnt have this, his stories might be a lot more dull (and he would probably get beat up more). same goes for the bat-signal: batman isnt likely to find any of his supervillains mugging people in alleyways, so if there was no bat-signal, every batman story would just be him fighting random thugs, and that would get boring fast. he needs the signal to tell him gordon needs him, and that means something big has happened, something the police cant deal with themselves.

not being familiar with too many more characters, i dont have a lot more examples of this, but the powerpuff girls have their phone with a direct line to the mayor, im assuming the green lantern rings detect danger somehow, professor x has cerebro, which isnt exactly the same, but he can see stuff happening in the whole world, so i guess he is the x-men’s bat-signal

a supporting cast

you ever notice how whenever they separate batmans sidekicks from him, suddenly bruce has a new girlfriend youve never heard of, and alfred gets more screentime? thats because a book that was just bruce alone with his broody, angry, monosyllabic, miller-esque thoughts would be boring as fuck. batman, and all superheroes, need people to talk to, whether they help them with their crimefighting or not. they need a supporting cast to discuss the current case/story with, or to remind them theyre not always superheroes and that they have a secret identity, and to remind you that theyre people. the best moments for a superhero are the ones where theyre not fighting bad guys, its the ones where theyre doing regular people things. talking to each other, laughing— superheroes hugging, superhero birthday parties, those are the moments when they go from superpowered badasses who punch evil in the face to people who seem like people you know, and people you start to love. most importantly, though, a supporting cast reminds you, and sometimes the character, that not everything is about them. there are people in the world besides the superhero, the supervillain, and the innocent citizen that needs saving.

wow this really sounds way more like a textbook chapter on superheroes or some kind of big essay than i meant it to!!!! this was supposed to be a guide for me to develop my superheroes by reminding myself what the important parts of a superhero’s individual mythos are

but uhhhhhh i cant think of anymore, so thats all

ok bye

Darwyn Cooke Catwoman/Selina, in Tim G’s TIM G Comic Art Gallery Room

I love Darwyn Cooke’s art so much.  His redesign of Selina is still my ultimate Catwoman forever.  And even when the plot of New Frontier got eyerolly for me, the art was perfection.
BUT.
See that bit on the right where he says “NO F-ME PUMPS”?
Now look at all the drawings of Selina’s feet.  Yes, she’s wearing some kind of weird arch-less shoe with a modest heel in all of them.  But she’s also hovering on her toes in every single one.  The otherwise-amazing drawing of her in the trenchcoat?  WHAT IS SHE EVEN DOING?  Is this “Alfred Hitchcock’s Charade: The Ballet?”  She is seriously en pointe.
Women wear high heels for many reasons: to be taller, to match a certain fashion aesthetic, because they look more professional, because their pants will be too long otherwise, because the Jessica Simpson Collection is surprisingly fabulous.  But they also wear them to create a lovely arch in the foot, to engage the calf muscle and make the leg look more shapely, to cause the spine to arch and the breasts and butt to jutt out in order to maintain balance.  High heels are intended to help the female body conform to the shapes the beauty industry has declared to be attractive.
So what Darwyn Cooke is doing here is drawing a woman who attains those arches and shapes without effort.  Which he can do, of course, because he’s drawing her.  She could have six breasts if he wanted her to.  So she can have an arched, pointed foot and a shapely calf and perky breasts just by virtue of being Selina Kyle.
But creating that with heels, like we poor women in the mortal world must?  That’s SLEAZY not SEXY, according to the top right of the page.  FASHION not STYLE.  (???)  BUTCH not STRONG.
As is so often the case in the patriarchy, the message is: have the perfect body, but only without trying.

WOW this is really gross
everything pluckyredhead said is exactly right
he draws her wearing heels, but then insists she shouldnt wear heels because theyre sleazy, so shes just… floating. if he just drew heels under her, there wouldnt be anything wrong— with the ART, that is. there is certainly a lot wrong with the clear reasons he did everything here. she must be sexy, but not so sexy that its BAD sexy (aka “sleazy”). she must be stylish, but not so stylish it looks like shes TRYING. she must be strong, but not so strong she sacrifices her perfect feminity and becomes the dreaded BUTCH.
god, thats just so extremely gross and barely even actually means anything
like, what does sleazy mean, as opposed to sexy, what is the distinction
what does fashion mean as opposed to style (this one REALLY confuses me, honestly)
when does she cross the line from strong to butch
does it mean she can punch, as long as she does it sexily? does it mean she can sweat, as long as her makeup doesnt run? does it mean she can get into a brawl, as long as her tits remain perky throughout? what the fuck does it mean?
it doesnt mean anything, there is no distinction except that she cant actually function or appear like a real person would doing the things she does
her face cant ever wrinkle, her muscles cant show, she should claw more than punch because knuckles are unfeminine, her poses cant be about balance and leverage and power, but daintiness and sexual appeal, she cant need heels to support herself, she must float just so
she cant be a real person
thats the distinction

i had a dream about a pokemon game that allowed for non-binary genders and character customization

so at the beginning of hte game it asked “are you a BOY, a GIRL, or OTHER?” and if you chose other it asked what your gender is and had a little list suggestion like pokemon games do and they were like, THIRD GENDER, BIGENDER, PANGENDER, MARTIAN, or enter your own and then it asks your pronouns

i think if i ever make a game where you create your character at the beginning im gonna do that
